Bow roller HELP!

First off, I feel like such an idiot for asking...

I am trying to get our boat ready to take out for the first time this year. (We've been remodeling the house and haven't touched the boat.) I HAVE to replace the bow roller before I launch/retrieve this boat again as half of it has fallen off. My problem is that it is a "pin" holding the roller on and not a bolt and nut. I don't know how to get the dang pin out! It has two end caps on it that look like they are pressed on. I tried heating them up and prying them off, but still couldn't get it to budge and started to heat up one roller. Do I have to cut this thing off and buy a replacement bolt and screw?

If you can help I would REALLY appreciate it! We really want to take the boat out and this is the last thing holding us up.

THANK YOU!!!

Re: Bow roller HELP!

Those hats (caps) need to turn like a nut while pulling off. If you pry hard enough though they usually pop off. Sounds like it's corroded on there good. Time to break out the sawsall and cut her off. Head out to a hardware store and replace the pin with a grade 5 or better bolt and lock nut. Good luck..bad day to be trying it.

I usually cut/ rip them off with wire cutters and visegrips.

I ended up cutting the rod and replacing w/ a bolt. Thanks for the heads up. After cutting it in two, I could tell that I had almost gotten one of the caps off even though it hadn't appeared to of moved before. Oh well, you live and learn.

Re: Bow roller HELP!

I recently removed my keel roller to install a keelshield. I used a dremel with a cutting disk to remove the cap from one end. If you look closely at the cap, you notice there are two tangs 180 degrees from each other that grab the rod or pin. Just cut each tang through and the cap slides right off. I paid $.80 for a new one at the boat store.
