Ive got 2 round holes where gauges used to go on my dash, ive always heard never to use the HD, Lowes resin and glass as it is waxed, would it be ok to use in this application though? Holes are approx 2" round and maybe an inch deep. Or would the "bondo hair" I always see Woodonglass talking about be better for this? Im tentatively planning on gluing small pieces of a proper wood or maybe a cutting board material behind, then glass using gradually larger pieces of CSM (or would a cloth work better?) On the "new wood" then sand smooth , then paint. Does this sound like it would work? What would you guys do?

Thanks guys, ive read a ton , but havent neccesarily seen this type of repair documented.

What do yall think would be my best plan of attack on this?

Yep the stuff from HD or Lowes is fine for this...nothing structual here. Finish it off with CSM or you could even use the lightwieght cloth as a finish for a bit smoother finish.

Thank you for the quick reply, just to clarify, are you suggesting using gradiully larger pieces of CSM or bondo hair to fill in the hole? And then top with cloth?

IMHO, I'd use the HD resin and CSM to put a couple of pieces of glass on the back and let it dry for a backer. I would then fill em with bondo hair and sand and fair. You can use bondo filler putty to fill in any pin holes etc. It's a dash and no water worries. Just like doing body work on a vette'. It will come out perfect

That'll work.....the stuff from the box stores isn't great material and it's waxed, not what you want for any type of structual repair, but for this it's fine. You'll need to laminate all in one shot....if not you'll have to sand the wax off in between coats.

Ok great, thanks WOG, and Cadwelder for your help, last question I promise :D will I need to sand or fare on the topside of the dash to fresh glass to get the new glass to stick? My dash is painted from PO. If that makes a difference in this...

If you lay CSM on Top, Yes, if you use my method... not so much. the Bondo hair and filler will fill the holes nicely. You will have to feather the paint to some extent but very little..

I think your right on track with your research relocyo ...

I like to replace substrate with substrate .. meaning I would go the way of the 2" wooden "pucks" instead of using bondo or Hair fillers.

You can prep your backside ready for poly and mat..then smoosh in your ply puck (wipe the backside with your gloved fingers) .

On the front side your going to need to grind out ( feather ) about 3" for a 2" hole .. fill with mat ( CSM ) .

Sand smooth and prime and paint/blend ( or for some prep/gel/sand/buff).

Its not really that hard unless your blending Paint .. gel is a tad easier ..

I think your on the track if you use Mat and Poly ONLY :) . .. plus your wood plugs ..

YD.
