So, i got my boat back from the dealer, after one hell of a mess, but have it back now, and it was a mess grease and oil all over the interior and sun deck. So cleaning it up i also decided to check air in the tires and got the compressor out thinking i would probably have to add air, wrong. I had to take close to 40 psi of air out of each of the tires, they were almost 90 psi, how did they not blow going down the highway? why in the world would that much air be in these tires?

Some trailer tire ask for a higher pressure. although 90 seems way high. also did you check the pressure COLD? Hot they will read 5 to 15 psi more than cold.

Running pressure HIGH is less of a problem than running them low. a higher than normal pressure will most likely only make them wear in the center.. maybe feel a little funny towing them too.

msojjo,

I am glad you got your boat home . Seems like you have good luck for a change!:D:p

What are the tires rated at ? 50 PSI? Then they were way overinflated, or the gauge you used is off. Or theirs was!

The tires are rated for 50 psi cold. I did check them cold as the trailer was sitting in the garage getting cleaned up. When they warm up im guessing they were in the area of 100 to 105 psi. I used two gages to check them just to be sure. Although i did see on here that people put a very high pressure in there tires to prevent flat spots during storage in winter. Maybe this was the case, either way the pressure should have been checked way before now, lesson learned, visualy they looked good so i didn't bother.

I'm wondering why the dealer left your boat such a mess?

It seems to me that every time that i have taken it in it's not as clean as i had left it. I'm not going to worry about it because it won't be going back there. I'm guessing they are thinking that they put enough free time and money into it that they were not going to spend anytime cleaning it back up.

glad to hear you have your boat back, it seems like a nightmare for you and now the season is almost over. one thing though next year it will be a good year for you. maybe time for one last trip to the water before storing for the winter.

I've had it out once for about an hour on a small lake in the area. It seemed to run pretty good, idled, ran out good. So i'll have it out about 2-3 more times this year. So i hope your right, i should be good for a while.

I'm glad you got the boat back. BTW you were right to drop the pressure down to the rated value. Tires run at excessive pressure can suffer belt damage and they lose grip due to more bounce and the change in contact patch shape. Not only that, wheel valves can pop right out of the wheel. Over pressurized tires really slip when it's wet, such as after a trip to the boat ramp.

I hope your troubles are over.
Enjoy that beautiful boat!

Re: Boy do i feel lucky

I have two trailers, one for small 14' Aluminum boat which calls for 90 psi cold.
The other trailer has 12" tires and also calls for 90 psi cold. I stand off to the side when topping off, would not want my head to close if that tire exploded.
I know the larger trailers use more of a car type tire, and those pressures are quite a bit different.
Did the Repair place over pressure these ?

I doubt that the repair place did anything with the tire pressure, they had a hard time fixing what needed to be fixed with the boat let alone messing with the tire. After reading numerous posts on here i hear that it is common to put 90 psi in the trailer tires while in storage.

You don't by chance have a gauge that reads PSI and kPA do you. You may have been reading the wrong scale.

No, i have been using a really nice digital meter that i recieved a few years ago. I thought to check my tires because i was messing with the tires on my truck, so i know that it's accurate, it better be it cost a pretty good penny. Even after letting out aprox. 40 psi the tires are still full, and when you hit it with a tire iron, you get the correct bounce back. A trick that my dad showed me, as he is a commercial over the road driver.
