Ok, I thought that it would be a good project for my son and I to document our resto (at least we can get help when we need it). So, here are the first pics of the '64 Starcraft Jet that we dragged out of the woods.

Removing the hardware

This seemed pretty straightforward, so far.

Removing Rub Rail

Removing Rub Rail

Removed the corner aluminum pieces

Pulled out the rubber piece ( I saw on this thread that they are still available from Starcraft)

Removed the bolts and nuts holding the rail on (good to have two people) and removed the rail

Sanding

Sanding

We started with 80 grit, as this boat has been painted 3 times in it's life.

The last time was pretty rough, as the brush strokes are very visible.

After the rough paint was off, we went down to 220 and then 120 grit. I do not think that we need to go down to bare aluminum.

I think that we are going to keep the snaps that were used for the top, as it will be too much work to remove and plug them.

I know you have a way to go on your restro. If you ever get bummed out or the end seems too far away, remember the final payout. You'll cherish forever the look of your son's face the first time he takes the helm. However bad it may get, at that moment it will all be worth while.

Hey Caz..

Nope you said it. No need to go to bare metal..get her down smooth and paint on top of it. If ya go all the way to bare tin..you'll have to zinc chromate primer her..so you'll just make extra work for your....kids!!!:D

Caz can I borrow them. I need someone to recarpet my bunks while I am at work again today before Andy has a coranary infarction :D. Looking good once the new paint starts flying the end looks much closer and you start to realise how awesome your boat is gonna be :D.

Cazman....looking good! Tearing things apart is always fun. Seeing the kids hard at work and having fun makes me want to start another project...oh wait...still need to finish the one I've got.

Keep the pics coming...and let us in on the color choices and any other "stuff" you have in mind.

Have fun
