There is a broken bracket on the side of the motor (Johnson 25 HP, around 1980). It is used to hold the shifter cable. What is this called and where can I get one?

Go to shop.evinrude.com and go to the electronic parts catalog. The part will be shown there, and you can buy it there.

Re: Bracket on side of motor?

From your description it sounds like the "mounting boss" that is cast into the metal lower motor cover. Unless you have the piece that is broken off, you might need to find the entire lower motor cover from a junker. Just paint it up with the correct paint and all is well.

OMC used to have a kit that they sold for about $1.75 that added a bolt-on mounting boss for the small motors like the 5?, 6 & 7? when you wanted to add remote controls. I wonder if you can still get something like that from Evinrude today? I had an old OMC part # of 380293 for the 6; 378624 for the older metal-hooded 1950's motors. See the attachment below and look at the unpainted part that holds the shift cable.

It is possible that some of those mid-sized 20 & 25s in the mid 1970's actually used a bolt-on part as well. If so they could possibly be adapted for you to use.
