Brake Fluid Compatibility

I just overhauled the brakes on the trailer for my 1984 Sea Ray cuddy. I used synthetic DOT 3 to refill. I also have a 2002 Four Winns trailer and I am unsure whether it has synthetic or regular DOT 3 fluid. I looked on the label of the synthetic DOT 3 fluid and did not see any restrictions about mixing it with regular DOT 3. Anybody know whether the two can be safely mixed?

Yes they can. My Valvoline synthetic brake fluid states this right on the front of the bottle.

If you re did your brakes, I would just flush out all the old anyway. I change mine out every couple years.

Agree with Bruce, bleed it out and replace.

You can even up it to synthetic dot 4 without harm. Dot 4 is just a better boil level. Again, I agree with the others, I would bleed it all and replace though.

Re: Brake Fluid Compatibility

Thanks guys. The Sea Ray brake re-do was a complete fluid replacement. The reason I posed the question is that I'm going to keep a bottle of brake fluid in my "tow box" just in case. And when it comes time for the Four Winns trailer brakes, I will replace its fluid, too.
