I have seen 7" drum brakes that might work with my Escort trailer with 12" wheels. The whole rig (boat, motor and trailer) probably weighs around 1800# dry, and both of my tow vehicles weigh more than twice that ('99 Dakota, '05 Pacifica).

Is it even worth adding brakes, especially such small ones?

Re: Brakes for trailer with 12" wheels

My `72 Glastron has a tandem axle trailer with 12" wheels. It originally had 7" surge brakes on the front axle. I replaced that axle with a 7" electric brake set-up. I like the control of electric brakes, I never see saltwater. I pull the boat with a super duty Ford, so brakes really aren't needed, they just give me some peace of mind.
