Brand new owner, older boat. Pics, questions.

I recently acquired my dad's boat for the price of $0, since he's lost interest in it, and I have water access very close to my house.

I have to check the paperwork again, I believe it was an '89, Regal, either 20' or 21', different papers have different lengths.

I'm excited, but it's going to need a few things before I can hit the water with it.

1. He said he had to replace the water pump, and didn't get the bottom of the outdrive back together right or something, so that needs to be checked. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, I've built heads, done head gasket swaps, cam swaps, etc. Is this something that would be out of my league or within it?

2. Looks like the bellows needs to be replaced. How much is it for parts, and labor if I go that route? How tough of a job is this?

3. Need to replace either the throttle arm, or the buttons. Not sure if they are independent, but it got ripped apart.

4. The seating layout is tacky. I'd like to get the whole interior reupholstered maybe next year. Also, a couple soft spots in the floor, it would be a good time to do it all together.

5. He said the condenser needs to be replaced about once a year at the beginning of the season. Any reason why? Can it be upgraded to a newer style that doesn't use points? Or is this system better for marine use?

6. The skeg was booger-welded back on it seems. Have go grind that down and see how the core weld is holding that on.

All-in-all I think the boat is fantastic for the price of 'free'. Granted, it needs some TLC, but I'm pretty confident I will still be pretty far ahead of the game.

I would really like to bring it to a marina and have it looked over thoroughly to make sure everything is good to go with the boat; I'd hate to overlook something simple and break down. I can't imagine it's much fun. How much could I expect to pay for that?

I also need to find a local boater education course. With Annapolis so close by, it shouldn't be a problem.

This is the boat in 2004 when I went to visit him:

New pistons. I have the little fin that hangs down over the prop. Booger welds on the skeg.

Guess it needs a new one of these bellows.

HORRIBLE seating arrangement. This will have to be fixed. Driver seat is a cooler underneath.

Needs a throttle, or, at least new buttons. They got a little hacked.

Wood should look real sharp when it's refinished.

Cushions and life vests.

Not too hard to tell what part was under the tarp. Needs to be cleaned up a bit.

Rear seat cushions can go low for a seat, or high for a sun deck. I think this needs to be redesigned somewhat. Or, at least rebuilt.

Nice boat, even nicer price! I don't believe that is the original seat though... looks like the originals were removed and replaced with that one though not sure why. As for your other questions I really don't know but someone will be along shortly to answer them.

Hey- Good looking rig- Hope you get it on the water soon-
check the transom-stringers-bilge for rot- . The 3.7 does not have a good reputation but some love them. Good Luck.

Really a nice designed boat! As far as the engine, it's not difficult
to repower with a 4.3LX (chevrolet-based V6) if you ever have
problems with the 3.7. The upholstery looks in pretty good shape
also. If you're feeling soft spots, it's good to replace the floors,
and that will give you a much better look at the stringers support
structure. The "Boat Restoration and Building" sub-forum has lots
of information on how to do all the work. It's really not difficult if
you've got basic mechanical/woodworking skills. I think you've got
a great time ahead

A little TLC and you'll have a very nice seaworthy all around boating machine, Hey, I think I recognize that helm from another "lets see your controls" thread?

Needs a bigger motor. That 3.7 is gonna be workin pretty hard. But speed may not be needed. If this is the case get that bellows fixed and enjoy.I did a complete tear down and rebuild on my Larson 175.I wish I had used it more before I took her out of service because one thing kept leading to another and it was two years before she got back into the water. Also this would have given me a better idea as to what I wanted to add or subtract when everything got redone.Especially on the interior.

Whoa...do people still use 14" monitors? ;)

Guess I will have to resize them again for this place.:(

Definitely not the original seats, this one is fugly, unbalanced, and out of place. I would LOVE to redo the entire interior on this boat. I've seen some pics of how I'd like it to maybe look. I have a lot of research to do though for that. I don't know if it'd be cheaper to buy prebuilt seats from a place like this site's store, or if it would be better off having everything built custom.

Thank you! I love it so much. I have a '97 2500 w/ the 12 Cummins, but that one can't touch the cab on this one!

That's what I've heard about this engine. When I do the interior, I will be replacing the floors as well, I know there are some soft spots. Def check the stringers too. Does replacing the stringers necessitate new foam as well? I remember as a kid we had a boat, and he had to put new foam in after doing the stringers & floor in it.

Thanks for the tip, I will check that forum out too. I am pretty handy, so that is a relief then.

Yeah...same ugly controls. For now. :D

That is the boat we used to have back in the day, 17' Larson bowrider. I wouldn't mind a bigger engine, but it's probably just going to be used for cruising/tubing/wakeboarding, so it should suffice for the time being. Don't want to get too far in over my head before I even get to enjoy it, you know exactly!

Yes you can do the bellows. I do the same type of car work and found the MerCruiser stern drive a pleasure to work on.
Buy the hinge pin socket and do the gimbal bearing and lower shift cable while you are in there.
Remote buttons would be more cost effective than a new control. All in due course I suppose.
A marina is going to bend you over for what you are looking for.
