I am replacing my below the waterline fittings before I apply an epoxy barrier coat. The new drain plug is brass....what is the best screw to use to mount it? I don't want to go with SS again because the old ones nearly corroded away (10 years). Boat is wet for about 3-4 months/year and occasionally hauled once or twice a month. If I use SS should I just coat the screw head with some ablative anti fouling paint??? I'm also going to replace the scuppers but those will hopefully screw together.

a good hardware or marine store. Also, there are several grades of SS and some of the "cheaper" ones rust. Problem is, hard to tell which ones are cheapies.

The part you are puting is is actually bronze, brass corrodes badly in salt water. I thought for sure iboats.com would sell bronze screws but I could not find them. Jamestown Distributors sells them and they have a website.

I've been to JD and I see the bronze screws...

I read somewhere that wood screws don't fasten well in fiberglass...is that true?

The screws on JD's site are actually close to a self-tapping, the threads almost go all the way up.

My only other option is to use SS and coat the screw head with bottom paint.

Actually, the SS screws holding the drain in corroded! The heads were eaten right off.

The bronze screws will be fine in fiberglass.

Never use SS screws below the waterline, SS suffers crevice corrosion, even the better grades.
