I've got the 7.4 liter MCM out of the boat, and while awaiting an engine, I'm sniffing around the transom assy, outdrive, etc., as I don't think anybody's been taking care of it. I see gear lube in the u-joint bellows, a radiused scraped area on the right side of the drive and bellhousing, and a coresponding scraped area on the inside of the outer transom plate. Obviously, the whole freaking drive is sliding to starboard. What am I likely to find if I take those swivel pins out? I got slack in the tiller, too. I read somewhere that If I just try to torque the u-bolt nuts to 55 ft/lbs, there may be enough slack in the square gimbal ring hole, that the gimbal ring breaks before it tightens up on the pivot pin. How do I avoid that ugly fate?

Thanks, Boat Tech. Never heard of it. I been all in that Merc # 11 manual, and haven't seen any mention of it.

Talk to Ron here: http://www.jrmarine.com/ They can rebuild your ring (if it needs it), and give you lots of sound (Bravo) advice. Nice guy! Good luck.
