I have an old 1994 vip valiant 19.5 I had rebuilt. Now I’m ready to ditch the old Yamaha drive In favor of a readily available merc setup. My boats just a 305 but I’ve found a good deal on a bravo one donor boat. I know an alpha would be plenty but the bravo would give me room to add more power in the future . My question is , is the bravo a high maintenance drive compared to an alpha. I’ve read about cone clutch shifting issues and wondered if that was something I would be fighting constantly.

I would take a Bravo any day over an Alpha. No more splitting to change the impeller, and the Bravo just like the Alpha last a long time if taken care of.

and a bravo wont spit its innards if you decide to put a stroked or a big block in front of it.
