I know it's hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it but I'll ask anyway. I have a noise that seems to be coming from the outdrive that started shortly before haul out. It's kind of a rattling, clanging type noise at low rpm (700 - 1500). It does not change when I turn hard in either direction. I pull the drive every year for inspection and put maybe 35 hours a year on it. I change the lube every fall with the recommended quicksilver high performance lube and it looks like new when I drain it. I always drain it into a very clean pan so I can check for metal shavings and have never found anything in the old oil.
I read where a gimbal bearing noise would be effected with a hard turn and like I said I don't hear any difference going straight or turning. Any help would be appreciated

Are you sure the noise is in the drive? Just a guess but it could be your exhaust shutters (flappers), try listening inside the boat after the bend in the exhaust after the risers.
Good Luck !

Gascan I'm not sure what you mean by "exhaust shutters (flappers)". My exhaust comes out underwater through the drive.

Ayuh,.... Inside the hull, there's exhaust Manifolds, then Risers, then cast elbows, then the Y-pipe which bolts to the transom housin'....

Inside the Y-pipe, at the very top, lives the exhaust Shutters, which are to block any back-wash of water into the motor...

If the rubber gets burnt off, they'll rattle at idle,...

Good call Gas Can...
