When replacing the prop shaft seals on a Bravo 3 do you need to measure the backlash? No gears were changed and the same shims are being used.
gears were not pressed off......they took it apart and I sent them in to get machined
There are several things which give me concern. The gears are not pressed on or off, they use snap rings and bolts. Machining a shaft makes it smaller so now the seal will not fit correctly. A worn shaft means it needs to be replaced, or built up and machined down.
Backlash tells you how well the gears mesh and are adjusted by shims. My guess from what the previous mechanics did with the shaft tells me they don't know what there doing, and/or don't have the correct tools. So letting them install would be no different then you doing it without checking.
Sounds like the shop went to a lot of trouble, rather than just replacing the shaft for about $400. At least if it was just the smaller of the 2 shafts that had the groves
Is it possible to change the seals on the shaft without removing the shafts? Perhaps that could explain why they didn't measure the last time?
It's possible but very hard to do. You basically use a dent puller and screw into the seal then IF (the big if) the screw holds it can pull it out. Hardly ever works on the inner shaft.
