Buddy had to pull his props off bc he damaged them and wanted to put his new set on. The rear nut came off easy and the front prop nut came off not too bad. Went to put it back on and once we installed both props they wouldn't turn due to rear prop (front prop turned fine by itself). It appears the front large nut will not go on far enough and we couldn't get it further on. The nut appears to have plastic on the rear and that is what we think is keeping it from going on further. Should he buy a new nut? Any help is appreciated.

What year is the boat/Stern Drive?

Is the nut thought to be original?

What type of bravo 3 socket tool are you using?

You for sure found and installed the front and rear thrust hubs too? Which will be item numbers 46 & 48 in the parts link below.

Some of the older big nuts where a major workout to get off and on only to get to where you think they wouldn't go on any further even using a big breaker bar + the heavy duty socket. The newer nuts are a bit easier to install as the nylock (Plastic) nut is a little more forgiving. If you have the time to spare, Try going with a new nut.

The original part number has superseded about 4 times now over the years and the new part number is 11-8M0105210 item number 47, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s.../30971/952/110

FWIW - I have found that you really need to clean the threads on both the large nut and the smaller nut in order to get them to go back on properly. Otherwsie they put up enough resistance that you cannot get them to go on all the way. You need to make sure the large nut goes on fully and holds the inner prop snug, but not too tight, then you can put the outer prop & nut on.

The 'plastic' ring is the nylock portion of the nut. . . . also as Fun Times stated, make sure you have the thrust hubs on there correctly and the nylock part of the nut faces outward from the prop.

1997 Mariah with a 5.7 mercruiser and bravo 3 outdrive

I know we put all the washers/spacers back on correctly.

Using a prop wrench that came with the boat.

I cleaned all the threads on the shaft and nut very well. The issue appears to be the plastic on the large nut. Once that hits the threads it just doesn't want to go. Had two guys trying to crank it down and it just wouldn't go; and we didn't want to force it. Had merc grease on there to help but to no avail.

I think the nut is original. Ordering a new nut and hope that solves the problem.

Thanks to all. Received new front and rear prop nuts and they went on fine, props turned freely....then the boat broke down and is now headed to the shop. Thinking it's the carb. Bummer.
