Bravo III driveshaft o-rings at gimbal bearing purpose?

I posted this on another site but thought this question might be better answered here.

There are two O-rings on the driveshaft closest to the u-joints. Can someone tell me "exactly" what each of their purposes is?

Background: I have a Bravo III outdrive installed (new) in 2011. I started hearing a "growl" this year (2014) that made me think the gimbal bearing was going out, I didn't know they needed to be greased and never did since it was replaced (also in 2011 now four years later) I pulled the drive and everything looks good -dry, U-joints clean and smooth, even the gimbal bearing rotates like butter. The only thing I noticed was that the o-ring closest to the u-joints was missing and there are wear marks with very slight rust in that area. I haven't yet pulled the bearing but I can feel with my fingernail enough wear to catch my nail ever-so-slightly.

Once I pulled the drive I was happy to see that the bellows were fine and that no water had infiltrated and relieved that that the u-joints where fine, but a little disappointed that nothing "jumped" out as a source of the "growl" - while underway and planning. There is supposed to be two O-rings, one in each of the two grooves closest to the u-joints. I only have one and it is black. I noticed that in the replacement kit those two are orange. When I cleaned out the groove for the missing o-ring, closest to the u-joint, I found very slight remnants of the color orange - the same color as the new O-rings in the replacement kit. Can this be the source of the "growl" and the slight wear marks I see on the shaft??

unlikely, the O rings provide the interference fit to spin the bearing
