Bravo III popped

I have a 2004 Chaparral Sunesta 254 with a Mercruiser 350 Mag and Bravo III outdrive. We put it in the water on Friday evening and when were coming up on plane there was a pop and the engine revved very high. I shut it down immediately but now there is no forward or reverse. I can see see the shift cables moving in the engine compartment but nothing changes in the outdrive. I am in line at the local repair shop but they are at least two weeks for being about to look at it. When you rev the engine in forward or reverse, I have only gone to 2,00 rpm for a short time, there are no rattling noises coming from anywhere. If the shift cable broke to the outdrive, would that send it back to neutral or would it just be stuck in gear? I am just looking for any suggestions for something small that I maybe able to fix quicker.

Any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Coupler or a broken shaft in the drive.
I was thinking about the coupler but the mechanic said usually you won't hear a pop when the coupler goes and there is normally a smell of burnt rubber. There was no smell.
Would it be a broken shaft between the upper and lower unit?

Thanks for you help.

I'm thinking the upper shaft or a gear broke

Put it in gear and see if you can turn the prop. If you can turn the prop look behind the motor to see if the shaft going into the coupler turns

I will try that when I can get back to the boat. I'm pretty sure I could turn the props when it was in gear but I can't remember for sure. There's not much room behind the engine but I did see the end of splined shaft. Will that be shaft I will be looking for?

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Yes that's the shaft
Can also remove the vent plug to see if drive is full of lube
