bravo lll question

I bought a boat at auction last year that had been repossessed. The previous owner stripped the boat prior to giving up ownership. The only thing left in boat was a 2000 5.7 efi motor that I completely rebuilt. I put a new transom assembly in boat and purchased a rebuilt Bravo 3 outdrive (not sure which Bravo drive was in previously). I got the boat back together finally, but the outdrive seems to be stuck in foward. I have all new cables and adjusted shifting according to Mercruser manual 11 and 28 using special adjusting tool (outdrive is supposed to be 2002) Put muffs on motor, started it but nothing seems to happen when I move shifter. I pulled off top and back of drive shaft housing and can see cable end movement at shift bracket on top of motor when moving shifter lever at drive shaft housing. What am I missing, or did I screw something up?
Thanx in advance

The cable probably missed the latch mechanism in the outdrive when you put the out drive on. I miss first try on about 1/3 of the installs. (see page 2A-31 of manual #28)
I've learned to put the drive on with only 2 bolts, have someone shift the control while I turn the prop and make sure it shift properly. When it does, then I finish the install.

Don, your right on again. With the back plate off, I had a buddy push and pull cable end. Latch mechanism moved toward back of out drive when he pushed cable in, however it did not move when he pulled. I backed outdrive enough to see cable end not in link bar cage. I removed cotter pin from link bar, inserted cable end into latch and held on to latch bar end with needle nose pliers until outdrive was tightened up. Re-adjusted cable per manual and its shifting fine. Thanx again Don

Re: bravo lll question

Put a new sealing ring on that back cover, or you will be getting water in the drive.
