Has anyone every encountered their trim motor (not the pump itself) going bad? I just purged my fluid so now everything is good.......but over the years (boat is a '97 and I purchased in 2002) it sounds like when the trim motor is running, there is intermittent "grinding" or "scratching" inside the motor housing. Its somewhat hard to describe, but its not a fluid sound all the way through. I'm sure these motors can go bad, and I've seen them for sale on Ebay and elsewhere for around $60-$70.

What can go bad inside the motor? Does this sound like a motor that its starting to fail? I'd rather replace it now, instead of be out on the water with no trim.....

What did the trim fluid look like? You say it all well after changing out the fluid, suggesting a problem there. I had a leaky seal that allowed water Into the system and it struggled to operate properly. Also, the seal material had started to "ooze" out of the trim rod holder and it was binding so bad, the trim motor struggled, sounding somewhat as you describe. After replacing the seal and fluid, all worked well. Good luck.

Sorry I didn't elaborate further on this. I did not have any problems with leaky fluid, I just happen to notice
that my fluid was a bit dark, so I decided to purge it and make sure there was new in there, especially since the boat is a
'97.....and I purchased in 2002 and it has never been changed. I figured whynot, certainly couldn't hurt anything. Now, the motor sounding a bit "odd"
has been noticeable for quite some time. I wish I had a new motor next to it, so I could compare the sounds you know? It just seems to have this grinding noice
intermittently when its actuating. I figured the motors just wear out over time and it needs to be replaced. I definitely do not hear any squeaking so I would doubt
that it would be this dry bushing?

Ayuh,.... It could be the motor, or it could be the pump,.... Run 'er til she pukes, 'n replace the Whole thing as a unit, the aftermarket pumps assemblies are 'bout the same as the Stock Merc stuff,....
