Took the boat out this weekend ran fine for a while. Second time out I was just leaving shore when I had a problem putting in gear. It went into gear with a pretty good jolt after that I only had reverse. I didn't hit anything & I was pretty much standing still when it happened.

Checked all cables inside & all looked OK. I then pulled the drive to see if the shift cable had come disconnected at the shift lever latch & that looked OK. With drive off shift cable seems to move fine.

I am assuming that the Cone clutch got wedged into one of the gears. In which case I will replace parts that are stuck or damaged

The drive is off the boat the top & front covers are off.

My question,.... If the drive is working properly, should rotating the cam raise & lower the clutch?

Boat info; 2002 Reinell, 350 Mag MPI, Bravo One

Thanks

Forgot to mention I have the manual. Mine looks a bit different than yours Doctur. (90-863160--1 JUNE 2003).

Can anyone confirm that the cam moves the clutch up & down? If it is not moving up & down can I assume that is where the problem is? Or is it too hard to move by hand? I would like to know if that is in-fact the problem before I start pulling gears out.

You have the correct manual for that drive 3ball,

I had an older Bravo do something similar. The outer ring on the gear (the ring with the + a - positions on it) broke loose from the gear. Hope that isn't your problem, it took a new gear set to fix.
I would pull the back cover off the drive and check the shift linkage.

Don the cover is off and the linkage seems fine. The gears around the cone clutch seem to be restricting the cam from fully rotating. also the + & - mark don't meet exactly in the center, they align with each other just to the right of center. Do I need to pull out the gears to see the problem or will something be noticeable with just the covers off?

Found the problem --
The shift cable was routed wrong causing excessive wear. Near the coupler the outer housing was completely frayed. the cable core still functioned properly but was bulging out of the housing. it seems like it eventually came out of the housing enough to twist onto itself.
