Automobile engines usually require roughly 1500 mile break in period, varying speeds, and not exceed a certain RPM, to properly break the engine in.

I'm assuming the same is applicable to my Suzuki 140, varying the speed during the first 5 hours or so?

hello
follow the break-in instructions in your owners manual. if not broken in properly it can cause excessive oil consumption and excessive oil contamination and a very short life span. forget all about comparing this to a car engine. about all they have in common is they both burn gasoline.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks, I haven't got the boat yet (2 more weeks!) so I'm just thinking ahead, if the same process is applicable (I'm making assumptions! the wait is killing me!)

Will do on the manufacturers suggestions.

Good for you on the new rig. As rodbolt said, your owner's manual will cover break-in. Suzuki has a 10 hour schedule. I would make sure the new boat has an hour meter. Enjoy :)

The first hour is the worst - usually under half throttle or 3000 rpm or less. What I did was put a six pack in the cooler and go for a leisurely boat ride to get the first 2 hours out of the way.

Thanks for the replies.

Bass, that exactly what we'll be doing. Heading out of Tacoma, circle around Vashon Island, and eventually ending up at a restaurant in Gig Harbor. :)

Ripsnort,
Congratulations on the new boat :)

In your haste to get it on the water, don't forget all the safety gear just in case something goes wrong in those first few hours.

I had a boat delivered from winter storage that was full of gas when it went in to storage but now the gauge showed empty which I thought was just mis-functioning.

I managed to get about 1/4 mile down the lake and the motor died.
Luckily I got a tow to the marina without any problems, but it took a few weeks before I stopped being the BUTT of all their jokes

Turned out the boat was shipped back to the manufacture over the winter for some warranty work and they had to drain the tank. My dealer assumed like me that it was still full and had not checked and I was in such a rush to get back on the water I made a stupid assumption too.
never again ;)

Ooh, sorry to hear about your ordeal! This is my 3rd boat so I still have all my safety gear from the previous boat.
