Does anyone know of a site that has the breakdown
of the parts on a motor and their purpose. Im definantly a novice at motors but Ive heard of many parts but for the first time Ive heard about a powerpack and it might be effecting my motor. What in the world is a powerpack? Is there a nice motors for dummies site online that can help newbies learn about their motor?

Dennis ,you're on the best outboard repair help forum on the planet. What leads you to believe that you have a powerpack issue?Did you perform a spark test at cranking speed and detect a no fire? There is a site called ishopmarine.com that has parts breakdowns for various makes and models but none that I am aware of that discusses the specifics on each component. You can get that info right here by just asking.By the way, you're getting some excellent help on your other thread.Stick with it,and those guys can help you get your engine up and running. No question is too stupid.Just fire away.

It's covered in the repair manual, but I haven't seen a decent online write-up. But, since you asked: the powerpack an electrical device powered by the stator, that drives the ignition coils and controls the spark timing. It's a component in your "capacitor discharge ignition system."

Im going to have to get a manual for my motor. Should I be asking for a repair manual or an owners manual for a 1996 Evinrude 48hp SPL ? Or are they one in the same?

You want a repair Manual or as some call it, a Service Manual. The owners manual will do nothing for you service wise except to recommend maintenance intervals. The best one to get is the factory manual. They are available at kencook.com or many times on EBay.. Not cheap, but worth every penny, as they are model specific unlike others which cover many years and models

A repair manual would be the best for your motor and it has lots of simple information of what makes your motor work and it will also have a trouble shooting section for your engine to pin point (example) Why no spark to plug to a simple cleaning of a ground conection leading to why coil is not producing the spark next check might be powerpack, spark plug wire faulty, etc. Start with the manual and learn all what makes the engine perform with all simple preventative maintenance procedures to perform on a daily basis if your boat is used often and it will prevent future breakdowns and disapointments. A stupid question is never a stupid question! This is why everyone is here to try to help you here on this forum. Good Luck!

Re: Breakdown of Motor parts and purpose

In my search I came across a CLYMER Evinrude/Johnson Outboard shop manual
2-70 HP Two Stroke 1995-2003 (includes jet drive models)
This is priced at $25 and the actual 48hp manual that I need is much higher. Would this manual be good enough or am I going to have to cough up the money for the Evinrude 48hp manual ?

Re: Breakdown of Motor parts and purpose

I have both Seloc and OMC repair manuals.

With so many different engines there's not much chance that the photographs will show your specific motor, some of the directions are vague. But it's written with the do-it-yourselfer in mind, has some maintenance advice, special tool workarounds, not completely useless more of a general reference type of thing.

OMC manual will be specific about your engine but it's written for mechanics.

My opinion you'll probably end up getting the OMC manual anyway but if you can afford it go ahead and start with Seloc or Clymer (about the same, I think).

For $25.00, I'd go ahead and get it....

I have a Clymers that for that series of engines. The 48 SPL is really a cost reduced 50 HP. The Clymers manual has served me very well on this particular engine series. Electrical testing is covered quite well.
