Breaker Points retrofit

I have a 1976 9.9hp electric start long shaft Evinrude. It has 2 sets of points and 2 ignition coils. I hate points, even when they work great. Is there a CDI conversion/retrofit out there?

Thanks!

Re: Breaker Points retrofit

The powerheads are the same , you will need the timer base plate, the plate where the secondary coil and sensor coil are, the bearing the plate rides on, a powerpack, 2 coils, the sensor coil and the secondary coil and possibly a stop switch. I believe the one side of the powerhead has to be changed to adapt to where the nuts and bolts hold the powerpack on as well.

It can be done, will cost you some coin but is possible from what I have read. I have the timer base plate and bearing if you need one.

Re: Breaker Points retrofit

I have to agree with Tashadaddy here. Power Packs do fail, and usually become intermittant before they quit altogether, causing untold grief. I have over 27 seasons with a 1975 9.9 Johhny that uses points. If you use a meter, or test light , you can set the points quite accurately, and more importantly, get them both the same.

I must caution you however to use a good quality condensor made in USA, old stock is fine. Newer Taiwanese made condensors have a habit of failing, we have seen this in Go Karts, Motorcycles, and Outboards when replacing condensors.

The reason I like points in these engines is because they are Magneto type, and do not use 6 or 12 volt DC battery current. This means the current through the points is lower and they tend to last quite a long time as compared to automotive style battery powered points. Additionally, I have never had a problem with miy ignition on the 1975 9.9hp, but I have replaced numerous 1980s power packs...what does that tell you?

Try the NOVA II Electronic Transistorized Ignition Module. You can get them at the following site (half way down page). They work well - I have been running a set in a 1969 Johnson 6hp with good result. Don't worry about the pull start aspect of this motor. I have been running mine for over 4 years with no problems starting the motor.

Jay, would 2 be needed for a twin? I want to convert my buddies 40 big twin with the nova II, these I've been told were a big impovement over the nova I which did not produce good spark with pull start motors. It also states it doesn't work well with flywheels with multiple magnets, don't the 9.9's have 2?

One NOVA II unit is needed for each set of points/condensors, so yes, you will need two for a Big Twin. They only work when the motor has one magnet in the flywheel, because the magnet is what "excites" the circuit. Two or more magnets will cause the motor to fire at incorrect times - obviously not a good situation!
