Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

Got advices for you ,but first, I do not know your engine ,so don´t blame me .

If you are planing to do some work on this engine , you shuld get yourself a manual .

Are you shure you have removed ALL bolts ?

The powerhead are removed from the rest ?
Have you removed the carburators + intake + reeds , maybe some bolts under there .
You got all the mainbearing bolts , shuld be 6 bolts ( 2 on top, 2 senter ,2 lower )
You also have some dowel pins ?(2 or more)they will only go out one way ( to the crankcase side ??)
You have removed ALL bolts around the crankcase flange .
If you are shure that ALL bolt are removed ,try knocking on the crankcase with a plastic/rubber hammer , do NOT use force .
If nothing happens ,look for more advice :)

Do not remove all bolts around top/lower bearings , shuld be 6-8 under + 6-8 on top (maybe more)leave some of them i place ( those on the sylinder side ) until you have removed the "crankcase" half of the block ( they will hold the crankshaft in place when removing the connecting rods ).

DO correct me if I am wrong and/or missing something :)

Thanks
I have removed the carbs but not the reeds. Thanks for the good info. You said the pins have to be driven out. whats the best way to do this? It dont seem to be enough room to knock them towards the cyl half.
Thanks
Hooked

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

The reeds, actually the intake manifold assembly, has to be removed to access the crankcase bolts.

The factory service manual has a drawing showing how to make the tapered pin removal tool.

Read and understand the manual before going any further for best results. As Clint Eastwood in a "Dirty Harry" movie said, "A man has to know his limitations."

Thanks for the good info. This will get me a step further. Sounds like I need to get the intake off to access the rest of the bolts. Plus get a manual in my hands.I appreciate Yall sharing your expertise.

Hooked

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

Hey I got it split apart. Now I see I got to have a special socket to fit the rod caps does anyone know where I can get one of these? And also is there any other special tools I might need besides a torque wrench. And what are any things to look for on the crank area ?
Thanks
Hooked

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

It's not a special socket, it's just a 5/16", 16 point socket and the torque wrench isn't something you want to scrimp on. Get a good one. In fact, you will probably end up with two of 'em. One for torquing small stuff and one for the flywheel nut. I can't think of any other "special" tools you will need but if ya get stumped with somethin' just post the question and someone will probably have the answer.

g'luck & c/6
Hooty

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

When you go to buy the socket for the rod bolts, it has to be of good quality. The best one I have used, and still use is made by Mac tools. Those bolts are really snugged down, and the socket will crack out the side. I have had even Snap-On sockets fail here. Those sockets have to be very thin walled to fit. If this is your first attempt on rebuilding one of these engines, you are going to have to go over that manual very carefully. There are a number of places to get mouse trapped here.

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

Mac Tools is the company that made the special 12 point socket for OMC for around 40 years. It has a black industrial finish and a medium length. I don't have a catalog handy, but it used to be listed as a Johnson outboard rod bolt socket.

Re: Breaking Crankcase apart

Seahorse iz correct. That is a 12 point socket. (16 point = another senior moment or c.r.s.) ;)

c/6
Hooty

Edit: R.Johnson, I've got a 12 point 5/16 Snap-On socket that I use that's probably older then 50% of guys on the board here. Still on the job. :)
