OCEAN CITY (AP/WBOC) - A Maryland judge denied bond to Christy Freeman, the Ocean City woman charged last week with the murder of a small baby.
Freeman appeared, handcuffed and shackled in a blue jumpsuit, in Ocean City District Court.
With her attorney by her side, Freeman asked that bail be set so she could be free, according to WBOC's Kevin Leahy on the scene. Freeman said she has no intention of fleeing, and that she wants to clear her name and set the record straight. Her attorney asked that bail be set for $100,000 dollars.
The judge rejected the request.
Leahy says friends or family quietly cried nearby, and Freeman looked very scared when the judge mentioned that the maximum penalty in this case is the death penalty.
Meanwhile, police continue to search property near Freeman's home for further evidence; police say they "would not be surprised" if additional infant remains were found.
On Thursday, Police say they found a garbage bag hidden within a trunk in Christy Freeman's bedroom. According to police, inside the garbage bag were three smaller plastic bags; two contained infant human remains, and the other contained what investigators believe to be a placenta.
On Friday afternoon, police say they seized a small motor home from Freeman's driveway. After executing a search warrant on the motor home, investigators say they discovered another garbage bag containing infant human remains.
Ocean City Police, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Evidence Response Team, say they will begin their search of the grounds this morning, a process that may take up to three days.
Christy Freeman, 37, lived in the apartment with her boyfriend and her four other children.
Freeman was hospitalized Thursday and police were called after medical personnel determined she had been pregnant, but the child was missing. Police said they obtained a search warrant for Freeman's home after interviewing her, and a small infant was found wrapped in a blanket in the apartment.
Freeman was later charged with first degree murder, second degree murder and manslaughter after investigators conferred with Worcester County State's Attorney Joel Todd.
Freeman is now being transferred to the county jail in Snow Hill.
