Breather pipe

Can anyone tell me what this pipe is for and where it should go, looks like a breather pipe yo me so I'm sure it should extend higher? Its gonna 90s Mariner 60hp

??----No it is not a breather pipe at all.----It is connected to a hole in front of the gearcase.-----That is used to feed pressure to the boat speedometer.---Tells you how fast the boat is going through the water.------My next boat will have a GPS speedometer with no messy tubing like that.

Ok, my question then is it shouldn't be open to water then so if I dont have a speedo then this should be blocked off?

Well you need to look carefully / ponder this.-------If you live in an area where freezing conditions exist you need to make sure the cavity in the gearcase drains !----Check with your local boat shop for top notch help.

No freezing conditions here or very unlikely, I would have thought it should be at least of of the water as I'm sure you dont want salt water in there? Maybe it cant enter I'm just trying to be cautious. Not many good boat mechanics over here hence the reason I'm asking
