I just changed the oil on it. Put in Castrol Synthetic Blend 10W30 (got it free). Is this ok? Motor is Briggs 17hp OHV single cylinder. Mower is three years old, this is its first oil change that I know of.

Yep...synthetic is a very good choice in small engines, since they run so hot.

But is the 10w30 thick enough? Every mower that I have had called for straight 30w.

10w30 is the same thickness as straight 30w when it's warm.

10-30 shouldn't hurt anything, but it's not ideal. It's listed as a second backup choice in most owner's manuals for those types of engines. Straight 30 is preferred spec in most climates.

Re: Briggs 17hp

I recently bought a new yard tractor, with a 17 1/2 HP, OHV, Briggs and Stratton engine, to replace my warn out tractor. The owners manual says to use ONLY 10-30....synthetic oil.

This might clear up the question at hand.

...Bob in Calif...

No....doesn't clear it up.....
What we need to know is are they hyd. lifters, or solid lifters????
Hyd. lifters require 10-30...solid lifters, HD30.
10-30 will get your valve stems eventually.
Bob, yours is either a Vangaurd or Intek, and Nate's may be an L-head....whole different beast.
