Briggs 6.5 not pumping fuel

I can pump the bulb a few times and get her to run for a second but it obviously isn't pumping fuel. I have switched carbs from a 6.5 that WAS running with the same results. I suspect the problem might be (y'all forgive my lack of small engine part knowledge) that little rectangle box that covers the valve springs. It looks like it has a reed valve in it or something. It appears to be ok but is it possible it has gone bad and I just can't see it? -or is there something else I've missed entirely? Thanks.

My kingdom for a Honda.

spots

Naw........you must just have a Briggs built with parts from the plant in Alabama.

Have you checked your fuel lines for air leaks? Its obviously not the carb if the known working one has the same symptoms. Just thinking out loud really.

:D "Inspected by Bubba"

I replaced all the lines and clamped everything. Including the little elbow tube leading to the "fuel pump".
Both carbs were cleaned as well.

The fuel tank has a crack in the top of it... could this be causing a lack of pressure that is necessary for the fuel to pump?

spots

If the fuel "pump" is run by vaccum sure.....

What bulb are you pumping? I don't know of any Briggs that have primers. I can run all my Briggs with the fuel caps off.......not that I do, but can.

Some, but not many Briggs motors have vaccum assist fuel pumps. If yours does then yeah that crack might be the issue. Usually the tank is mounted high though, most B&S are gravity fed.

After checking around I found out that that box has to do with emissions, not fuel flow. I put everything back together and sealed up the cracks in the tank with some fuel resistant adhesive/sealer, gave it a pull and the stupid thing started right up! I dunno if it was the tank or not, just glad that I don't have to buy a new mower! :) Thanks for the help.

spots

I don't believe there is a pump. It's gravity fed.
