I am interested to find someone who has either bought or used a new 5hp briggs and stratton air cooled. I have an old 14' aluminum and come summer the lilly pads up here in Minn, along with other weeds congest the lake front pretty good. I was thinking of getting the motor just for cutting up the weeds(since it is air cooled no worry of plugging water pump) so it would make using the pontoon and pike boat easier to get away from shore.

Re: briggs and stratton 5hp

I know a guy that uses one a bowfishing boat for the sole purpose of pushing an 1860 jon boat slowly through the reeds, weeds, and mud in south carolina. He got rid of his trolling motor completely and has a steering set up on his shooting platform to run the throttle and steering for the little B&S motor. He says it works great.

I am considering the same set up when I can throw the cash down.

Contrary to popular belief, Briggs and Stratton does not make weed eaters. They make engines. I don't know how this motor would cut any more weeds than your bigger motors. But by all means, buy one. It will help to secure my dad's pension with Briggs. :)

From the couple people I've talked to, they work well. I wanted to get one myself, but I needed a long shaft motor.

Keep in mind most aircooled outboards use a
watercooled exhaust leg.
Also there was a post earlier about the B&S not
being good for extended trolling and slow running due to cooling problems.

I think I'd be leery of long idling or non-moving positions, too. Any air cooled motor needs moving- you guessed it- air to cool it properly. Seems to me that you could easily overheat one like this.

On most B/S engines Ive seen they have fins cast on the flywheel to act as a fan. Wouldnt this work to keep engine cool? The little bit of speed youd push a lawnmower wouldnt add that much to cooling would it?

I been working on them engines for like 20 years now. They are good engines lawn engines i mean. At least the lawn mowers I workes on. The engine is made to withstand the temperature at just a idle. You don't have to keep it moving if fact a idle i would think would be a lower temp than some going fast through the water all day. If the engine is tuned right. Unless it says different in the manual about this. If I had a engine like this for a outboard i would.
1) Keep the oil at the right level some engines are different but I'm talking about the crankcase I seen that 2 or 4 cycle might have crankcase oil If you got 2 cycle make sure you are applying the 2 cycle oil also the right way.
2) Keep the engine clean also the cooling fins.
3) Change and add new oil like it says in the manual.
4) If it says that it's ok to use synethic oil than
i would use it
because this is much better oil.
5) Keep it cover and out of rain and the gas tank to when you can this helps but is not a must if you can't do this keep a eye on the gas to make sure it is water free.

These are very low maintenance engines. But if you don't do any of these you could run into a total loss except the part about keeping it covered.
I have found that these engines if taken care of will give you a lot of use. But they can be a problem if you don't take care of them.
