i have an old 1966 garden tractor M1-A1 battle tank..electric start..

the charging system is a mystery to me..

it's magnets around the flywheel science.. if someone can explain ,, that'll be great..

but my real question is.. is it a wear-outable thing..

Re: briggs & stratton charge systems

Hi Crab!

On old battle tank mowers there are usually few things that go wrong. The key in the keyway under the flywheel plays an important roll. If the key is worn or half sheared from running the battle tank mover over rocks and stumps it will screw up the timing and not permit charging.

As for the for the spacing on the air gap where the magnets pass the contacts.... adjust that gap to the thickness of a matchbook cover.

I doubt the parts ever really wear out... only the key in the keyway.

Bob

Hey crab bait! The way I read your post, you are asking how the system works.

It's pretty basic. What is required to produce an electric current is a conductor, a magnetic field, and relative motion between the two. The coils amount to a "concentrated" conductor. So, when the magnets are whizzing by those coils, current flow is induced in the coils, and BANG, you have charging current.

Bob's answer is on the money too. As long as those magnets are passing the coils at a reasonable distance, you'll get current, but the coils CAN fail, just like the stator in an outboard.

I hope that was the info you were seeking.

Another approach is that a conductor, an electric current, and a magnetic field will produce relative motion. BANG. You have a motor!

-dd-

there usually is a small diode in line with that charging coil as well.....

Re: briggs & stratton charge systems

thanks fellas.. my electrical apprenticeship was a long, long time ago.. it just didn't look like there was enuff stuff there to generate current..

don't know/didn't see any coils..( not sayin' there ain't )..

heck,, it still has 'points'.. they sell an electronic ignition for it.. if the points ever fail,, i'll buy into it..

thanks again.. the mystery is a wee more clearer..
