Briggs Stratton saltwater use question

Did anybody use this 5hp motor in the saltwater exclusively, and if so, how's it holding up? How often did you take it out? Anyone who runs it in saltwater ever have to make a warranty claim, and if so, did they honor the warranty or could they tell you were running in saltwater?

I would be using it maybe once every two weeks or so for a couple hours each time. If I hosed it down afterwards, I'm pretty confident it wouldn't corrode, but does anyone have any first hand experience?

Thanks, and I apologize if I missed this topic somewhere else. I ran a search and found 33 hits on this engine, I read through all the posts and still didn't find an answer.

Howdy, McClaught.

I believe that B&S specifically states that salt water use voids the warranty.

I understand that JB, my mattress also has a tag that says "don't remove under penalty of law." :) I'm just wondering what people's real life experiences with these things in the saltwater is.

I wouldn't think it would be too bad, as it isn't water cooled. The worst that could happen would be needing a new lower unit after a few years use.

I don't have a B&S so thake this with a grain of salt (pause - pause). My guess is that if you run one of these in saltwater and rinse it down faithfully after every use with fresh water and spray it thoroughly with WD40 and keep it in the garage it might last a couple of years. I would give it a year or less if left on the back of a boat in the water.

Saltwater is nasty stuff for anything not especially designed for running in saltwater. I been runnin in salt for over 30 years.
