A friend of mine fought a 250 lb Halibut for quite a while. The local boy in our boat grapped the gaff in the 14 foot cartopper. His first gaff was right on the money. Though the monster seeing the local had wrapped the other end of the gaff line around his arm decided to head home tipping the 14 footer over sending the local boy to near death and us two into the blue. All was caught on video. The three of us were rescued by the boat video tapping. The local went down about 30 feet he said before returning with a chunk of Halibut on the gaff!

that's exactly why they harpoon them. The harpoon head slips off the shaft and is attached to rope with a buoy.Much safer.

With a 250 pounder, just shoot it, it;s a lot safer than fighting it. Of course some areas may have restrictions on that.
