Tore my motor down this morning and came across this piston. I was wondering if I might be able to reuse it or is it to far gone? All the bearings look really good. Piston walls are very clean no scrapes or scratches. Found the broke piece of the piston in the oil pump so I got lucky there. Take a look at the picture and let me know what you all think.

Thanks
Matt

Would not advise using that piston with that piece missing. It could allow the piston to rock in the bore as it passes TDC and BDC.If it comes totally apart your going to hurt a lot more parts.Possibly even trashin your block.

Re: broke Piston

I think you should replace it. That much material gone will affect the balance of the rotating assembly and the longer it is run the more likely other parts will feel that stress. Not only that, those skirts are there to keep the natural tendency for the piston to move back and forth or "teeter-totter" in the cylinder inline with the rod journal, this movement wears cylinders unevenly top to bottom and also wants to egg-shape them. Having one skirt and not the other in my opinion would exacerbate this tendency and the wear pattern would would happen sooner and be more pronounced. I also think the other skirt would not be long for this world as well, who knows what that would do when it lets go.
