1979 35 hp johnson,So lest week the boat was sputtering and had to rev alot to get it to clear up and the plugs were bad black. It had problems getting on plane. And today it sputtered and then died. And this was getting on plane to.It is getting gas and spark.I changed the plugs and it will not run.If i keep cranking they get a little wet after awhile. It was acting like it was running on one cylinder sometimes.I tested spark by a screw driver close to the motor.

Any help appreciated. This is over my head haha.

Re: broke reed?

Any fuel dripping forwards, bad reeds can cause that
When the plugs got wet, did you have the HT leads on it? If it was sparking they should of combusted with a normal spark

Re: broke reed?

The High tension leads from coils to sparkplugs, or did you have the HT leads grounded elsewhere or the lanyard removed?
If the reeds are going fuel can often drip forward out the front of the carb

You wrote this
"If i keep cranking they get a little wet"
Did you have the HT wires from the coil attached to the sparkplugs at the time?

Re: broke reed?

Go to any parts house and get a cheap spark tester. Set the gap at 7/16 " open air gap and then check the spark. If it won't jump that you have ign probs.

Re: broke reed?

Well if you have spark and a wetplug it suggests flooding.
Check your not flooding it, faulty float, leaking etc

Re: broke reed?

Yep, leaves the plugs out to help air it out.
Check to see if the fuel bulb holds firm for at least a few minuteswith engine off, if it doesnt it can mean its leaking through the carb

Re: broke reed?

it will not stay tight long.Maybe for about 7 secs and it will leak down a little but would that flood it out?

Clean the carbs while your in there, if its flooding and no fuel is atomising through the idle channels it wont start

Re: broke reed?

Tilt it up and prime bulb, is it leaking from carb now?
50/1 would be fine
Its flooding or you have intermittent spark
