Broke the Swivel braket on a Johson 9.9 NEED HELP!

Im new to this site so any help will be appreciated. I borrowed my neighbors 1974 Johnson 9.9 and while backing up at the lake the motor fell from the tilt position, the foot got caught in the dirt and basically broke the swivel braket in half. This is the piece that allows you turn the motor and has the carrying handle. I found a bracket on ebay that will replace it but I dont have the first clue how to do this. It looks like you have to take the entire motor apart. I called a local marine shop and its $90 an hour and the guy said a min of 5 hrs. I know I broke it and need to fix it but I cant afford to put $450 into it. Is there anybody that can tell me where to start so I can do this myself?

Gotta pull the powerhead to access the upper mounts. Remove carb knobs, remove handle from recoil string (knot it so it doesn't pull back into the spool), remove bolts holding belly pan to powerhead, remove bolts holding powerhead to mid, remove fuel line & cap from fuel pump, and unplug kill wires from mag plate. That should do it. Expect to replace the upper exhaust housing gasket.

Also gotta remove the lower unit. Remove bolts, undo the shift rod. Drop unit. Put lower unit on last when reassembling so you have the water tube in place.

Look into the sections about the lower units, and powerheads, and it will give you a lot of information
about how to work on these motors- for free...

Thanks for all the replies and tips. I bought a service manual also that I think will help. Are there any other gaskets that I will need to replace. I got the exhaust gasket on order.
