broken 1975 6hp spool, can i use other years?

i have a 1975 6hp motor. i broke the spool for the pull start. my question is this, there is different part numbers for the years prior and post, can i interchange the spool? they all look the same. it seems the 68-71 spool is metal, where my year and years after are plastic. the shaft broke and i am looking for a replacement.
any tips?

It would seem that you must have done a parts number search. 1975 was part number 386568. It is replaced by 387509. So whatever 387509 fits..........

thanks frank, it seems that the run of 74-76 was the odd ball years. motor runs great tho. stupid starter went out while on a week long fishing trip. altitude was at 7000 feet, and thank god it is a one pull start. i was surprised she wouldnt purr like at sea level.

thanks again, i ordered the replacement part 387509 off eflay. will post the results if it fits or not. what the heck, new for a little over 18 bucks delivered.

I have the same motor.... that part is fine.
But if you have the manual, pay close attention on reassembly....if you don't, take a pic or pay close attention when you take it apart.
I got it wrong...but it "seemed " logical. It "worked" but not properly.
Finally realised it was wrong and got out the manual.

part came in (got it in two days, how do they do that from ohio??) i ordered the part after the advice here, and got the spool in two days.
well it worked like a champ. manual doesnt tell you its easier to install the spring on the bottom first before installing the spool. i got it to work, a little of installing, and taking apart.... but the part works, and wanted to share that the new part number replaces the old one fine.
