Help! Currently camping at Florala State Park. Brought the boat with us.

Black alternator wire broke. I believe it goes on + side of coil?

Would that also cause alternator to stop charging?

Someone here can correct me if wrong, but as far as I know that motor never came with an alternator, so it would have to be a kit or a DIY job. Got any pics?

I still run the stator under the flywheel.

Black wires are normally ground wires.
Might help if you let people know what kind of alternator you have.

It's an add-on kit. One really thick red wire that is the primary.
Two more smaller wires (red and black) coming out if alt. The black one broke off. It was
attached to the (+) side of coil.

What kind of alternator?

On a Delco marine 10SI 3 wire (typical 3 wire marine alternater), the red wire coming out of the back is the excitation wire and the black wire coming out of the back is 12V switched. It provides 12 volts when the alternator is turning, which is probably why it was connected to your coil to run the boat.

Pick of the back of a 3-wire Delco 10SI here (click on right side small pic to enlarge pic with wires):

The 3 wire Mando is color coded the same way:

It's a Delco 10SI kit like you said. Got to know if broken black wire would keep alt from charging battery. Do I have bigger problems than a broken wire?

The alternator should still be charging with the black wire disconnected. All the black wire does is provide a switch-controlled source of 12 volts, you don't have to use it. But if it's not hooked up, you'll need a wire that provides 12V to the coil to run the engine when the ignition switch is on.

The little red one MUST have 12 volts to excite the field windings, otherwise the alternator won't charge. It won't charge if the battery is too low to deliver the excitation voltage. Make sure the little red wire is connected and the battery is charged enough to provide the initial excitation voltage.

Hook it back up and see if it works.

In Florala, you can get crickets, worms, Vienna Sausages, and boiled peanuts. Voltmeter, I dunno. Not really trusting the gauge. Any McGyver techniques?

Just as I thought....the Florala Dollar General didn't have a voltmeter.

Damned vibrations!!!! All four bolts holding the two halves of the alternator together broke, too! I literally needed some hay baling wire, which I am absolutely sure I could have gotten at the Florala Builder's and Farmer's Co-op, but I used a bungee cord instead. I definitely need to start a new thread on 470 vibrations.

The vibrations are why a lot of the cheaper alternator kits just don't work. They can't hold the alternator solid enough to prevent vibration, and you see what happens when you have a lot of vibration. The crankshaft pulley on the 470 is also not the most perfect pulley known to man. It causes most of the vibration.

I can't remember where I got the kit, but it was over $300. I looked at one sold by Breezeworks and it looks very similar, particularly the wiring. It was identical. However, my brackets are front/back with respect to the alternator, where theirs appears to be front/front. The top brackets appear identical, too.

Thanks.
