I have a 1976 85 hp Johnson Javelin and I noticed that when I pumped lower unit gear oil it was leaking from the prop area. I saw that it had two bolts that were broken off just behind the prop. Any idea how to reomve them. Do I use a puller to remove the shaft guide? Please advise.

Get the manual, looks like you have to get in there and find whats going on.

is this new to you or you just didn't notice, have to wonder if theres any fluid left, did you drain the old out?

I just bought this used and noticed it when I went to add oil and it started coming out of the prop area. I put in a flash light and saw that the 2 bolts were missing and this is where the oil was coming from. i tried to put in some new bolts but they would not go in. So I ussume that they are broke inside. Can this piece be pulled out with a puller after removing the other bolts?

Re: Broken Bolts

if im getting you right, there are 4 bolts that hold the bering carrier in there, they are fine thread bolts and are special in that they have a machining that allows for a seal,i suggest you remove the other two bolts and pull the bering carrier out,you will need a puller, you may be able to use aan automotive puller ,but you will need to make some puller extensions with a loop on each end so as to grab the cross arms in the carrier and pul it out,you may understand what im saying after looking at the part, that said, once the carrier is removed you should see 2 large snap rings down insidethey hold a floating metal piece that is tapped to accept the bolts you are missing, its possible the missing bolts are broken off in that piece,or perhaps stripped,or,if your lucky, they just loostend and fell out, either way,I suggest at this point you buy a seal kit and change the orings and seals,
