Well we were going great about 20 min then the engine died. Found distributor slightly loose. Adjusted to get started and then the engine had high RPMs and little power AND sounded like timing gear rubbing against timing cover. What the hell? Well replace spark plugs because no spark after plug #2. Test run boat power still low at WOT. Then died again. No rotor turn. Pulled distributor and found broken gear. What would have caused this? Especially the rubbing against timing cover. Can actually feel it. Is it time to sink it???

Re: Broken distributor gear AND......

I looked at your post John linked.

(Mercruiser 3.0)

So you replaced the cam gear, right? Did you get the cam thrust plate installed properly between the cam and gear, then screwed to the block after the cam was installed? The thrust plate keeps the cam and gear from walking forward/back. If it's not there, or floating, the cam could walk forward and rub on the timing cover, probably breaking the distributor gear in the process.

That's my SWAG

Re: Broken distributor gear AND......

Sorry. Yes 3.0l merc
When cam gear went back on spaced it .0025 with feeler gauge from thrust plate. Per manual.( .001-.05 so half way in between) And tighten down plate screws to I think 6 lbs.
All the noise cam after going WOT after about 20 min. Actually maybe 3000 rpms. Not really WOT.
Is all lost. Or simple readjustment of cam gear and new distance gear? Thanks for the quick response.
