Not sure if thats what it is called first.

Just bought a boat, 1978 starcraft, came with two motors, a mercury 500 50hp that needs work(different thread will be created) and this merc 200 29hp. Was told it ran fine but there is a broken section that i need some info on before i move forward on it. It looks like cast aluminum but i may be wrong, but if so, is it easily weldable, is there a replacement part i can purchase or should i just sell it and get a different motor.
Thanks in advance and happy boating

Are you talking about the skag? That lower fin on the bottom of the gearcase? Many prop shops have weld on replacements. It is a common repair.

That' called the anticavitation plate, but it really should be call antiventilation plate. It should be repairable. Keep the oil in the gearcase to act as a heat sink, but drain an ounce or so to allow for expansion from the welding heat. Afterwards replace with new gearoil

That can be welded looks like somebody hit it with hammer to get the lower unit off.

Possibly, it may have been had epoxy on it after cause when the guy was showing me the boat he just tapped it with his foot and it flew off, kinda humorous really
