here is a video of what was going on with my motor. it has done this in the past but not near this bad after it first started doing this, i took the gear leg apart the gears looked perfect. since I couldn't find anything wrong i assumed no harm no foul and just put it back together. the other day it got extremely bad and even got to the point where we lost all driving capability.

well after we swam the boat back to the dock. Yes, thanks to the very kind people who drove right past us we got to swim the boat to the dock. this is what I found

I know that the gear leg has to be replaced but I am wondering if y'all could help me determine what caused the problem so that when I get it replaced, i can make sure it doesn't happen again.

That is a two piece lower unit. Too bad, because it looks like a 2 to 1 ratio off a 90 HP engine and those were a little more rare. These lower units are not as well designed as the later one piece lower unit. BEFORE you decide to invest in a set of gears and a gear case, or even a whole lower unit, consider buying a trashed engine with a good midleg and lower unit. Your power head and almost all other parts can be swapped directly on. The one piece lower unit has a much better selection of propellers and is about 3 MPH faster. Additionally, it has a much larger water pump.

OK! Nuff said about swapping. I can see that the pinion gear has stripped all the teeth. What probably happened is that the upper seal went bad, water was pumped down into the gear case, and the teeth wore and broke. As chunks of gear teeth became wedged in between the gears and bearings, they put pressure on the case and it cracked open.

If you insist upon replacing the gearcase, see my private message to you (If I can get it to post) I have a gearcase and a 1.7 ratio gear pack.

I can not post private messages on this new "better" P.O.S. forum. Try sending me a PM. I also have two complete lower units.
