broken johnson 85

i just aquired a 1980 johnson 85 v-4.I pulled both heads and found a burned piston and a cracked cylinder.Are the blocks specific to their year or are they interchangeable from older to newer? I,m fairly new to these and am learning.Thanks!!!

You should be able to take any crossflow variation of that block and mount it on the leg.<br /><br />From what I remember anyway <br /><br />TMD

Yep...what MD said. But remember....newer is better and do check the block out before ya' buy.

The 1977 25" 85 and 115 blocks have the late model mounting bolt pattern as both the 20" and 25" 1977 140 hp.<br /><br />Any V4 1978 and up have the late model bolt pattern.<br /><br />In 1979 the V4's went to a large center main journal crank. On these blocks the lower front pan mounts were molded in as part of the front half of the block. The small center main blocks had the pan mounts bolted on. <br /><br />Any V4 1976 and earlier will not bolt up.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thank you for the useful info,but im having no luck finding a replacement block yet.Does anyone know if they make sleeves for this motor?Or does anyone know of anyplace that may have a block,thanks!!!!

Any machine shop that does marine work should be able to resleve the bad cylinder and sell you a piston for it. You need to do only the one that is bad.<br /><br />Any idea what caused it as you don't want it to happen again?

No i dont.I figure on rebuilding carbs and checking the timing once rebuilt.

I found a block!!!Serial # is 351-9624.Is there a way to id the year by the serial #.Patience will pay off!!!!! Thanks.

Are the front pan mounts bolted on or part of the front half?
