I have an 86 15hp Evinrude. I was getting my boat out to go fishing, temps had dropped to the low teens. I had the motor up as high as I could get it, and as I was moving the pin back to its normal location, the plastic clip snapped off.
Any suggestions to repairing or safey wiring it in place? making one out of rod or threaded stock? any worries of corrosion if I make one? thank you for the help

Re: Broken plastic clip on tilt pin.

Same thing happened on my 35hp. I attempted to drill it for a pin, but soon found out it is hardened and un-drillable. I made one out of stainless steel rod, drilled for stainless cotter pins. Of course that means putting it in the holes you want to use and leave it there. Unless you want to mess with the cotter pins. I suppose a clevis pin would be an option. So would buying a new pin with the plastic clip.

Re: Broken plastic clip on tilt pin.

Just an update. I drilled a small hole in the plastic surrounding the metal pin, and made a leash for it using some extra DR cable, a couple of crimp sleeves, and a large duo clip. I used one of the positioning holes for an anchor point. I can still move the pin top to bottom.

I gave Tims Outboard a call, Dan was super helpful and had pins on hand. I got 2 of the old style pin, sent to my house, for half of one new pin. Great resource, thanks so much for a great site, this is the second time the guys here have saved the day for me. I'll be calling Tim's again, next time I need anything for my motor.

Re: Broken plastic clip on tilt pin.

I haven't gotten them yet but imagine they are going to be very durable.

For the others here, dino has been a real help the last year or so, with my motor. When I broke my pin, dino mailed me on he had in case my attempt to figure out how to use mine failed and I needed a back up.

Dino, would you like that pin back? I didn't drill any holes in it, but I made a leash for it. I'll send you that, along with the metal eyelet that snaps right into the extra hole to fasten the leash to. And those flashers I told you about. let me know. And thanks buddy!

kbait,
can you double check this part number?
I would like to change my pin as the clip is broken too, but
I can't seem to find this part listed anywhere.

But I was hoping it was the old school w/o a plastic clip. Thanks.

When I called Tim's, Dan was able to get me the old style pin for my motor. It fits perfect and I could not be happier with the service. next time I need parts, that's who I call.

I know this is an old thread, but what is a "DR cable?" I've got the same issue, and I'm bristling at the idea that a replacement pin is over $30.

Get a piece of stainless steel rod and drill a hole in each end for cotter pins--or hitch pins if you plan to change the tilt from time to time.
