Hey guys. Trying to drop the LU on a 1983 Evinrude 140 V4. When I attempted to remove the shift rod bolt the head snapped right off. I soaked it in PB Blaster for a few days prior - thought it would help but I guess not enough. Any ideas on how to get it out? I don't see any way of getting a drill in there and it's still frozen solid. Thanks.

on the other side of the sharft i would take the nut off & pull the lever out starbord side then lift power head off then you can drill or what ever , the easiest way for me is to cut the shift sharft with a hacksaw blade & replace saves all the work .

The easiest way is to pull bottom carb, disconnect shift cable and shift into forward and split the aluminum shifter block vertically with a saws all. This will allow it (block) to split as threads are in bolt side and other is the smooth pin side. Leave it attached to shift rod linkage and just cut till you reach shaft then you should be able to snap the block into where pin is.

Re: broken shift rod bolt head

Thanks for the tips guys. Finally got it apart after messing with it for 2 hours. I had a hard time fitting the sawzall in there so also used a drill just to help drill through the shifter block. Then used a punch to knock it the rest of the way off. Unfortunately in doing that it broke the whole arm off that the shifter block slides on to. It looks like it's cast as part of the intake manifold. I don't supposed JB Weld would be strong enough to hold it? Probably have to pull the intake manifold off and have it welded.
