broken shift rod

i have a1988 125 force model 1251x8a. bought it from a gentleman who said the shift rod was broken. how do i replace it thanks

What part of the shift rod is broken.The upper or lower?
The upper is a pain but do-able.The lower:remove the lower and dismantle the unit and replace the shift rod in the assembly.
The upper remove the lower unit and undo the nuts at the top and replace the rod.I have the upper.You pay shipping and it's free.J
