Broken shifting mechanism - Lonestar

1971 Lonestar 16' aluminum.

In the front of the boat near the steering wheel is a box that contains two levers: the gear shift and the throttle. The gear shift mechanism broke inside this box. The broken piece is a white plastic piece - it sits on the cable and holds the lever arm to the cable. It broke in two, resulting in one piece resting on the left side of the arm and another piece on the right side.

I'd like to know the recommended way to fix this. Should I attempt to locate a replacement for the piece that broke? Or is there some sort of "generic" replacement for the entire lever box?

Don't know about replacement parts, but here is a complete setup. I am guessing yours is the same manufacturer as your motor . . . ;)

Thanks a bunch for the link.
But wow, at $120, I can hardly justify it considering that's more than 1/5 what I paid for the boat + motor + trailer.

I'm hoping for a $10 solution on this one!

They're common on eBay etc. Good luck!

If you want much help, you need to post make/model of your outboard and control box...guessing it's an OMC/Evinrude/Johnson? As already said, best bet is to watch Fleabay for an entire replacement.

The outboard is an 1964 Evinrude 28hp. Model 28402M. There's nothing written on the control box.

Okay...fyi to help you find a replacement: Evinrude motors came with Evinrude Simplex shifter/control boxes. Johnson motors came with Shipmaster boxes. They are identical except for the name. Get on Fleabay and search for OMC dual lever control box or OMC two lever control box...OMC was parent company of Evinrude/Johnson.
