i bought an 87 thompson with a 3.0L Mercruiser 4cyl sterndrive and it has a piece missing off the skeg from maybe hitting bottom at sometime in shallow water. I was wondering is there a concern or does it need to be replaced or just go ahead and drive it??

Re: broken skeg

no concern.... unless your prop hangs below the bottom of what is left of the skeg. If so, you probably want to invest in a skeg guard (about $100 bucks or so). I put one on my outdrive, slips on like a glove and attaches with two bolts (supplied with the skeg guard).

Re: broken skeg

The skeg is designed to extend lower than the prop to protect the prop from damage.

Will it cause a performance problem? Only if its bent

Can you post a pic of yours?
