I'll start this by saying,....

Even though I've done this In the Bilge before,.....
For the Little amount of work to Pull the motor,.. I'll Never do it in the Bilge Again......

I have this 3.0l running take-out motor kicking around the Shop,+ the Reason it was swapped was the broken starter bolts,+ the fact it was easier to update the boat to a newer 3.0l,.....
In order to get this motor Gone from My shop,.. The bolts,+ starter need replacing,...
Want to do a Compression Test,+ General Evaluation of the motor to Sell It.......

After I had the motor up on a bench, where I could See Everything,....
I started by using the method I explained in a previous post,...
My Mentor taught me this trick many years ago,....
Start by finding a piece of Rubber Tubing that'll just slide Into the hole the broken bolt fits Into,......Slide the tubing Into the hole,+ slide a welding rod into the Tubing,.. Grab the rod with the Stinger,+ move the rod In till it Arcs on the broken bolt,.. Then Release the rod with the Stinger handle, effectively welding the Rod to the remaining piece of Bolt......
Walk Away,+ Let It COOL,..... If you're as Lucky as I was with 1 of the bolts,.. It'll just turn out on the end of the welding rod........
The Reason I Stress a Rubber piece of Tubing is, I used Nylon, It Melts Much Too Quickly,..... Rubber Burns rather Slowly,+ keeps the welding action to Where You Want It,.. On the Bolt....
By the time I grabbed the camera, I had already cleaned up where I had welded the other hole Nearly Closed on the Block,+ Totally Missed the Bolt,...(top hole in this pic)......

After I cleaned All the weld out of the hole,+ exposed the broken bolt, Again ,..... I had to Flatten the surface of the bolt, so I could Center-Punch it,.......
When Drilling Through the broken piece,.. You've Absolutely Have to drill Completely Thru the broken piece,.. Not just deep enough to get the Easy-Out to seat,... Drilling Completely Thru, Relieves some of the pressures on the broken bolt,+ will allow it to be extracted........
This is a shot of the completed hole,.....

Oh Ya,.... Take Notice,.. You Can NOT drill out the bolt with the Flywheel Cover In Place,....
It'll interfere with getting the hole Drilled Straight,+ Centered.......
Here's a shot of the Easy-out, installed,+ Ready to turn out......

I realize that this Isn't what all the Weekend Boaters want to see,+ hear.....

Ayuh,.... It's abit of a Major Repair for a measly Broken Bolt,...
But,.... It's the Right Way to Fix it.......
Here's a shot of the finished job,+ the offending bolts the way they came out...........

Good Luck with Your's..............
