Broken/stripped Tilt Cylinder Cap

My motor is a 70hp force. Apparently over the winter, water was in the tilt cylinder and froze. This caused the cap on the top where the rod extends through to pop off and strip the threads on both parts. Everything else about the tilt system works great so I definately dont want to have to replace the tilt cylinder.

I have a good friend who has a machine shop and is very skilled. Has anyone on here ever experienced my problem and/or fixed it this way? I'm pretty confident he can fix it or reproduce the cap. If he can't, then I guess I might as well weld the cap back on since it would have to be replaced. Any thoughts???

When talking to my friend about the problem, he recomended using j-b weld. It had crossed my mind before but I was a little reluctant. I'm going to go ahead with it tonight and reinstall everything tomorrow after the stuff has fully cured. Ill post my results.

Installed today. Went great. The seal with the j-b weld held through the bleeding process from adding the new fluid. Hope it lasts at least for a while. Now to fix all of the other problems with the motor, lol!

Hopefully that will hold. I saw a brand new trim assy. on line for $225. Definitely worth the effort to fix. I've seen some fixes with JB Weld that are amazing. I think as long as there isn't too much stress and heat, you're OK.

The only time your cap is going to see any significant pressure is when you put the motor in reverse. I would never even remotely consider putting that kind of fix on my boat ... but ... realistically, don't go into reverse with any kind of power and you should be fine.

If it was me and I was looking for a McGyver fix then i would have drilled six small holes around the perimeter and bolted into the cap - using the jbweld as sealant. Still not going to last and I still would be ashamed to admit that I did it ... but hey - at least you could safely go into reverse!

Yeah, I kind of rushed into doing it that way. When I get more time, I'm going to put a weld on it though.

I don't think I would weld it. The rubber melts and bubbles before the metal. Then you're stuck with a broken ram that is welded shut.
