Broken timing pointer...swap intake manifold or make one?

The timing pointer on the intake manifold for my donor powerhead was broken...

I have the old intake manifold, with the timing pointer still attached...but Id rather avoid swapping if I can...

I can also fab my own pointer, I suppose...But can I accurately ascertain TDC without a TDC tool as prescribed in the manual???

And a final question...could one set a conservative max advance while on the water? Or is this just altogether a bad idea??

You may in principle make a timing pointer anywhere you like, it may just not align with the timing marks on the flywheel.
The TDC stopper is not a necessity to determine the TDC, you may use a bolt, caliper, dial gauge or whatever to measure it out.

Thanks for the quick response haffiman....

So I just measure TDC, and make sure my homemade pointer is pointing to 0 on the flywheel, correct?
