I have a 1958 west bend/elgin 12 horse motor that has finally broken. It runs great but something has broken in the drive. I hit a sand bar, the shear pin bent a bit but did not break. The motor died and when restarted surged and made some bad noises... clanking. I popped it into neutral and it it made one last noise and then no drive at all. I am very mechanical but have never dis-assembled a outboard drive before. Any suggestions, guidance, advice... is greatly appreciated. I love the old motor and it's the orriginal setup on my 14 foot boat. I don't have a book but will try to find one as I am sure I have no hope without good information. Any suggestions on the best book? Thank you.

Re: broken west bend drive

You might try your local public library. they may have a copy of The old outboard repair manual vol I. I think this is published by Intermec. Anyway this book may not cover your exact model, how ever there should be enough useable info to keep you headed in the right direction. If not, try to study other manuals that cover other makes of the era. Of corse there not going to be exactly the same, but will be of the same basic idea. It may also help to know that West Bend was sold to Chrysler to form Chrysler marine div. Some of the designs were carried over. You may find that a Chrysler manual might help. I don't know for sure. Anyway study up a little and have fun.

Re: broken west bend drive

thanks for the tip. I'll try the library. How come nobody post any diagrams on the web... our we to small of a comunity? I also have an old ford bronco and they post wiring diagrams, vacuum line diagrams... almost everything. I am suprised that I cannot find anything on the web about outboards. I would think more people would be trying to share outdated manuals and technical drawings for these things. Anyways glad I found a good site to share ideas!

Re: broken west bend drive

On this board they are concerned with copy write laws. They (Iboats) also sells after market manuals. I think we all try an respect that situation. I personly own a fairly extencive library of outboard info, drawings, parts manuals and repair manuals dating to just pre WWII. I will share this info person to person, especialy in cases such as yours where the info is not readily available by other means. The trouble is I don't have any info on your model that would be of help to you. Then there is the problem of time. I have asked some of my computer whiz buddies what would be involved in putting all this stuff in my computer. The concencess seems to be more trouble than it is worth. The good side to all this is that someone some where has what you need. And these boards can help you find each other fast.

Re: broken west bend drive

I understand that the need to protect copyrights and to respect the people hosting/helping keep the sites going. This is a really cool site and it is great to be able to pool so many people together, I was just a bit suprised that there seems to be no sites with manual pages posted. It is so common to find obsolete and out of bussiness items shared on the web. I hope someone out there has service info on my outboard for sale or to share. Thanks for the great site and please don't take offense to my comments I appreciate your input and all the hard work people put into making this site possible... does anyone sell a book that covers my problem?
